I am interested in getting all of your opinions as to what each of you define as an “Orienting Response”. What is it and where does it come from? Is there any research on it?

I have been corrected when using "orienting response" as a term referring to just what takes place during poly tests---specifically p.o.t. type tests. The only orienting response that takes place is when an examiner FIRST reads the question in the pretest. Orienting response, as defined by the scientific community refers to a new and/or unknown stimulus causing a reaction to the person. See this highly educational video which deals with orienting responses---albeit, in more dramatic fashion.

There is all kinds of research on the orienting response. Think of it this way: you're engrossed in reading my 100% accurate responses here (just don't compare any two or you'll find I disagree with myself half the time). Somebody unexpectedly says "Hey Todd," so you look up towards the sound. You just oriented to the stimuli. It's close to that simple.
